Brussels and literature

Few people are aware of the importance Brussels holds in literature. Sir Walter Scott, lord Byron, Charlotte and Emily Brontë, William Makepeace Thackery, James Fennimore Cooper, Ouida, W. H. Auden, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad spent time in our fair city. Many French writers, among which Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud and so many more, lived or worked here. Let one of our guides take you on a literature walk through Brussels. Apart from showing you where writers resided or had fun, excerpts from books and/or letters are quoted. Step outside the city centre and Brussels is teeming with references to (inter)national literature. This gives scope for walks in Molenbeek, Laeken, Saint-Josse, Schaerbeek, Etterbeek, Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Uccle and the European district.
